There's More on Craigslist than Furniture ...

It’s amazing what you can find on Craigslist.  Want some chickens?  Check out the Farm & Garden section.  Need snow shoveled this winter?  Check General Labor.  Looking for a handyman?  Someone to write your memoirs?  A caterer?  They’re all on Craigslist.  Apparently you can also find people with names like Aphrodite or Stone who want to show you a good time, but I’ve never checked out that section.

A section I have used with good results is the Job listings.  I’ve hired people through ads there, and also found freelance and full-time positions myself.  In fact, my last three jobs were found through Craigslist!  So that is how I came to be sitting in front of three people last week interviewing for a communications consultant position.

Now, over the course of my career I’ve done a lot of interviewing.  I’ve been the interviewer and the interviewee.  Between career advancement and moving to different states for my husband’s job, I’ve been the interviewee numerous times.  But I still get nervous, and the panel interviews are the worst as far as I’m concerned.  You know that while you’re answering one person’s question and looking at them, the others are scrutinizing your every move and detail.

It’s not that I don’t have perfect confidence in my ability to do the job, I do.  I get nervous about other things.  For instance, I talk with my hands so I have to be careful I don’t knock over the glass of water they’ve so thoughtfully provided me.  Yes, I’ve done that.  Actually, more than once.  I’m basically a klutz.  One time the full glass went across the table into my interviewer’s lap. (Amazingly I still got that job!)  Or the time I was just getting over a cold and had a coughing fit that wouldn’t stop.  I could see the interviewers surreptitiously move their chairs a little farther away from me.  (Got that one too!)  There was the time I pulled out my portfolio and it was covered with dog hair, as it turned out, was my hem of my skirt.  Luckily they were pet owners. Perhaps the worst interview was the one where I was suddenly overwhelmed by what I later described to friends as a premenopausal glow, but which they thoughtfully informed me was “flop sweat.”  I couldn’t help myself; I stopped in the middle of answering a question and tore off my jacket while they all stared at me. (Didn’t get that one.)

For the one last week I was perfectly groomed and had double-checked all presentation materials the night before -- not a dog hair in sight.  I moved the glass of water carefully to the side.  I was healthy. I was prepared.  I provided thoughtful answers to their questions.  I made them laugh. In fact, nothing went wrong.

At least I don’t think so. But the HR person told me she would try to get back to me yesterday, and I still haven’t heard from her.

So please send me some positive vibes!  In the meantime I’m going to go back on Craigslist to see if any interesting new jobs have been posted …

A Pretty Little Thing

Today I'm showing a quick little before and after.  I found this nightstand on Craigslist

It was sturdy, but stained, scraped and generally sad looking.

But since the price was right, I thought I'd see what I could do to brighten it up a bit. It was very dirty, so first I cleaned it up with a bleach and water mix. Then I gave it a couple of coats of ASCP (Annie Sloan Chalk Paint) in Paris Grey. When that was dry I topped it with a coat of ASCP in Old White on the trim only.

I distressed a bit so that some of the original gold trim and cream showed through, and put back the original pulls which I had painted in Old White and lightly sanded.  I think my favorite thing about chalk paint is that you can use it on anything, including metal hardware.

I lined the drawers with gift wrap in a complimentary color and finished with a couple of coats of clear wax.

Quick and easy-peasy, but what a difference!

Now it's a pretty little thing! It attracted quite a bit of attention at the tag sale, and was my first piece of furniture sold!

I Survived My First, and Maybe Last Tag Sale

Sorry if I’ve been a little MIA.  I spent last week trying to finish up projects for the Tag Sale, with mixed results.  After a very busy day Friday I was up ‘til 1:30 a.m. (I guess that’s Saturday) finishing tagging items.

I got up at 6:00, gulped down a couple of cups of coffee and my husband and I packed up the van, drove to Falls Church, and unloaded everything.  Luckily my friend Tracy came to help me with the sale, because with only 4 ½ hours of sleep I was having some cognitive difficulties (and those of you who are saying I can’t blame my cognitive difficulties on lack of sleep, I know what you’re thinking!).

Since it was a holiday weekend, I was a bit worried about how many people would show up at the sale. Plus there were some ominous clouds gathering overhead.  You’ll notice in the photo I didn’t have a canopy like the others in the sale, this being my first one and all.  I had meant to bring some tarps, but I was too sleepy to remember.  As the clouds got darker I got more worried.  “Gee,” I wondered, “What will I do if it rains?” Then I yawned.  Luckily Tracy doesn’t have cognitive difficulties, and she ran to the nearby hardware store to buy some plastic drop cloths.  Then she slowly explained to me the plan to quickly cover my stuff if we felt a raindrop.  I think she repeated it a couple of times and waved her hand in front of my face to make sure I was awake and paying attention.  Luckily the first raindrop woke me up and we sprang into action, because it started pouring.  I should have taken a photo, but after all that exertion I was tired again.  Thankfully because of Tracy’s quick thinking, my things survived the storm just fine.  The sun came back out, off came the drop cloths, and things picked up a bit.

I went with a pink and black merchandising theme to tie into the Mr. P's Emporium logo.

The child's tea set shown on the demilune chest was the first item to sell

I sold the nightstand in the foreground and the little chest I featured here

I had a photo of Mr. P out with a blurb about a portion of the proceeds going to
Homeward Trails, and a friend thought it was a memorial -- he's alive and well!

We even had pink and black polka dot cups for the pink lemonade
we were giving out -- they matched the tag ribbons.

So I made it through my first Tag Sale.  I think I just about broke even after factoring in the cost of the van and supplies, but I learned a lot and Mr. P’s Emporium got some exposure.  I may try it again sometime on a weekend that isn’t a holiday and has a better weather forecast.  In the meantime I’ll just continue selling on Etsy and Craigslist … after I get caught up on my sleep.

Hope you all are having a great Labor Day weekend!
